A Master's Guide to Playing Toto

Everything you need to play Toto: how the 6-from-49 game works, ordinary, System and QuickPick bets, the seven prize groups, the real odds and sensible ways to play.

TL;DR — the short version

  • Toto is a 6-from-49 lottery: match all six winning numbers for the jackpot.
  • An extra "Additional Number" is drawn, which boosts some lower prize groups.
  • System bets cover more combinations but cost much more than an ordinary bet.
  • The jackpot odds are about 1 in 14 million per line, so play only with spare money.

What is Toto?

Toto is Singapore's best-known lottery, run by Singapore Pools. You pick six numbers from 1 to 49. In each draw, six winning numbers plus one Additional Number are drawn. Match all six and you win the jackpot (Group 1), which rolls over and grows when nobody wins it.

Prize groups

Toto pays seven prize groups:

GroupYou match
Group 1All 6 winning numbers
Group 25 numbers + Additional Number
Group 35 numbers
Group 44 numbers + Additional Number
Group 54 numbers
Group 63 numbers + Additional Number
Group 73 numbers

The top groups share a percentage of the prize pool; the lowest groups usually pay fixed amounts. Check Singapore Pools for current prize rules.

Ways to bet

Ordinary bet

Six numbers, one line. The simplest and cheapest way to play.

System bet

Choose more than six numbers (for example, seven to twelve). The system covers every six-number combination of them. A System 7 covers 7 lines, a System 8 covers 28, and costs rise quickly from there.

System Roll

Choose five numbers and let the sixth "roll" through every remaining number, covering many lines.

QuickPick

Numbers are chosen randomly for you. Your chances are exactly the same as with your own picks.

The real odds

With one ordinary bet, your chance of the jackpot is about 1 in 14 million. Even Group 7 (three numbers) is far from guaranteed. System bets improve your chances only because you're buying more lines.

Spending more never changes the odds per line. It just buys more lines.

Master-level tips

  1. Pick unpopular numbers. Birthdays (1–31) are very common. Choosing numbers above 31 doesn't improve your odds, but reduces the chance of sharing a jackpot.
  2. Avoid obvious patterns like 1-2-3-4-5-6 or straight lines on the bet slip; many people play them.
  3. Set a fixed budget per draw and don't raise it when the jackpot gets huge.
  4. Consider a group syndicate with friends to share the cost of System bets, agreeing the prize split in writing first.
  5. Check results on official channels, and keep your ticket safe until you've claimed any prize.
  6. Play only with licensed operators. Unofficial Toto betting is illegal in many countries.

What doesn't work

  • "Hot" and "cold" number charts. Every draw is independent.
  • Paid prediction services. Nobody can predict a random draw.
  • Doubling your spend after a losing draw.

Frequently asked questions

How does Toto work?

You choose six numbers from 1 to 49. Six winning numbers and one Additional Number are drawn. The more of your numbers match, the higher your prize group.

What is a System bet in Toto?

A System bet lets you choose more than six numbers, for example seven or more, and automatically covers every six-number combination of them. It costs as many ordinary bets as it covers.

What are the odds of winning the Toto jackpot?

With one ordinary bet, about 1 in 13,983,816.

Does QuickPick have better odds than choosing my own numbers?

No. Every combination has the same chance. Choosing unpopular numbers only reduces how many people you might share a prize with.
